Google Maps is the first must-have application any smartphone user should get once he starts owning the device. Yes, sometimes Google Maps has its own geography and logic, but it is definitely more trustworthy than any of its rivals.
The latest updates and redesign made Google Maps a little more confusing than it used to be, and newbies may feel at sea trying to figure out where are the essential navigation buttons or how can they help with defining their location. Here you have four simple tips for the Maps application use.
Set up the map
Some drivers get confused by this one. When you are driving and using Google Maps for navigation, the map is oriented at the destination point of yours (see the top part) and not North. But you can switch it to North by tapping the small compass-like thing at the right of the screen.
Want to rotate the map? Tap ‘resume’ after setting up for the North and your direction will turn and go upwards. And the white strip at the bottom of the screen hides the information about all the turns you will take on the trip – just tap it or draw to the top.
For the directions follow… blue button
Among all the apps where you are asked to tap in location, none is as good at knowing everything from the first letter as Google Maps. To impress you with the speed of ‘mind reading’ Maps use the bunch of databases – all the locations known in the area, the places you have been to and those you’ve researched recently.
If you know where the needed address can be found on the map, you can skip typing. Hold your finger on the needed spot and you will get blue car icon and red pin – the one showing the distance and the second one the address you are interested in.
The blue ‘distance’ button actually holds the directions you need – there you can choose the type of transportation and get the quickest route to follow.
Google Maps knows the neighborhood
Literally, any neighborhood you might get into. If you are somewhere new, find the white strip saying something like ‘Explore the area’ and you will get the huge list of places open at this moment. You can choose to see places within driving or walking distance and start exploring the city yourself.
Thus, Google Maps cuts the awkward communication with locals – at least with your hotel concierge. Plus it is always with you.
Forget Yellow pages – Google Maps knows everything
Naive people and newbies might still believe Google Maps are just able to show directions. But these are experienced guys who know – this app is the miraculous yellow pages in your pocket.
Remember all the jokes about Google knowing everything, even your thoughts? See tip two for the proof, and keep reading. Google Maps is tied to the massive Google database with all the information in the world including restaurants and movies, roads and shops. With Maps, you can find anything – especially if it has the physical address. Do you need a phone number of the specialized clinic at the other part of the country? Look it up on Google Maps – it is faster than searching through the browser.
If you are looking for some restaurant, Google Maps might even take you on a small tour around the place if it has photos uploaded to the web. Who needs Google when you have Maps to show the location and take you there?
Now you know a little more about the favorite navigating app of millions all over the world. Yes, there are many other applications that provide similar options (but not all of them at once). But it is Google Maps who save time and energy for you, and it is the small app cutting down pollution by taking you right to your destination.
