Usually maps provided by guidebooks cannot impart detailed image of the city, their purpose is to give a general impression. That is why purchase of detailed map can be a sound solution. Choose the map according to your plans: if you want to use public transport, the map should show subway, bus and tram lines. If you want to look through the sightseen, get a map with detailed city center.
The best places to purchase paper map for driving are gas stations, bookshops and newsstands. And it would be better to choose road atlas instead of the map as they are more compact and still as detailed as usual maps.
Huge advantage of digital maps is that they can prompt the fastest way to the destination point, navigate you through the city, and count how long will the walk or drive take. Moreover, as you use digital map you also get clear notion of the traffic situation around and your current position.
When you want to use digital map for driving, there are three variants:
- Online mapping app that you usually use at home. As long as you have the Internet connection, you will be able to use it without problems and a benefit here is that you already know how to use it as you did it before. Google Maps propose a possibility to save maps to use offline, so you can download maps when you have an access to Wi-Fi and save traffic.
- Offline mapping apps. There are apps that are free and do not require Internet connection to provide detailed maps, for example, City Maps 2Go or Navfree.
- GPS devices. When you rent a car, you can rent GPS device with it also, however, the main disadvantage of this variant is that it is rather expensive – around $10–30 per day.
